Override Passes in Amherst Saving Services For School, Town, and Library Programs

AMHERST — March 26, 2010 — Residents voted "YES" to approve the $1.68 million Proposition 2 1/2 override by a wide margin in favor of providing money to school, town, and library programs and positions that would otherwise have been slashed.

The vote was the third tax-cap override in Amherst's history and the first in six years and was decided by a better than 58-to-42 percent margin.

Clare Bertrand, a member of the Yes for Amherst coalition said the "this is a mandate that Amherst wants to invest in Amherst".

The override is aimed at preserving specific programs and positions in the aforementioned areas with each providing lists of what would be saved with the additional money.

The override could add up to $264 to the annual tax bill for a resident living in an average $334,600 home.
