STILL CALLING FOR SINGLE-PAYER SOLUTION
Mass. should shelve its reform model

Boston Globe, April 4, 2010

THE MARCH 29 op-ed “The state’s single-payer solution’’ by Benjamin Day and Peter Hiam shows why only a single-payer approach, or a far more stringent public control than contemplated, can rein in the Commonwealth’s medical costs.

With the best of intentions, Governor Deval Patrick is requiring medical insurers to justify any premium increases exceeding an inflation-rate benchmark.

But the best of intentions will not be enough. Previous such attempts have failed. How could this one work any better?

That what Congress adopted is essentially the current Massachusetts approach is no reason for us to keep it. On the contrary, we know that its steep copays and deductibles leave many unable to get care they need, or bankrupt from medical debt.

It’s time for the Commonwealth to ensure actual health care for all, while relieving the financial burden on municipalities, businesses, families, and individuals. It’s time for single payer.
